During the pre-clerkship curriculum, all medical students, regardless of ultimate career choice should participate in the care of patients of all ages in order to gain a foundational understanding of pediatric health and disease processes. Students therefore need to experience pediatric conditions embedded into the basic science curriculum, and gain exposure to families and children of various ages throughout medical school to enhance communication and physical exam skills.
