Adolescent medicine training in medical school: Room for improvement?

Although adolescent medicine is a learning requirement for medical students, studies have found significant variation and gaps in training.1,2 At our Regional Medical Campus, there is no dedicated adolescent medicine clinic, and third year medical students generally receive limited adolescent medicine exposure beyond the lecture hall. With this in mind, we sought to create a new experience that would improve medical students’ knowledge of adolescent medicine and allow them to become more confident and skilled in interviewing adolescents. We established a new partnership with the School District of Palm Beach County Medical Sciences Academies Honors Programs in high schools in order to facilitate this experience.


This study aims to assess a new adolescent medicine experience for third year medical students in the high school setting.


Implementation was begun in October, 2016.   Survey data about students’ perceived knowledge, self-efficacy, and attitudes from the first months of implementation will be available by March 2017.


This partnership with schools provides an innovative way to provide enhanced exposure to adolescent aged children for medical students, especially if hands-on clinical opportunities are limited. Because this exercise is built directly into the curriculum of the third year and the strong partnership has been established with local high schools, it is highly likely that this program will continue to be maintained throughout the next several years. Should other institutions adopt a similar approach, we believe it would be an easily transferable model for adolescent medicine education.
