A
New Curricular Resource for Pediatric Educators. Larrie Greenberg,
Steven Z. Miller, William V. Razka, and William G. Wilson, for the FMCR Pre-Clerkship
Collaborative Working Group. George Washington University, Columbia University,
University of Vermont, University of Virginia. A new draft curricular resource,
funded by a grant from the Division of Medicine and Dentistry, Bureau of Health
Professions, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to the Society
of Teachers of Family Medicine, is being developed that addresses proposed competencies
to be attained by all students prior to entering the core clerkships. This draft
resource, which is tied to the six ACGME competencies, will also address special
topic areas of: 1) genetics; 2) oral health; 3) geriatrics; 4) end-of-life
and palliative care; 5) informatics; 6) Healthy People 2010 objectives; 7) substance
abuse, including mental health, 8) bioterrorism; and 9) core problems in family
medicine. It provides an overarching conceptual framework for the continuum
of medical student education and residency training combined with a flexible menu
of resources with varying levels of detail depending on the user's needs. Teams
of experts in clinical teaching and curriculum design from pediatrics, family
medicine and internal medicine have been assembled through the project's Preclerkship
Collaborative Workgroup to critically review and specify prerequisite competencies
essential to effective learning in the core clerkships. Priority areas for curriculum
revision have been identified by the workgroup in the draft resource. These areas
were validated through an independent survey of clerkship directors. The workgroup
has developed curricular resources aimed at assisting educators in teaching preclerkship
students within the context of the six domains addressed by the ACGME competencies. |
