Development
of a Web-Based Tool to Monitor Student Progress towards Meeting Clerkship Requirements Author:
Catalina M. Kersten, MD University of Missouri School of Medicine,
Columbia, Missouri Background: Ensuring an optimal learning environment
for students to meet clerkship specific goals and objectives has become even more
important with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) ED2 requirement. Objective:
To develop a Web-based tool to document and track patient encounters throughout
the clinical clerkships. Methods: All clinical clerkships participated
in development of a unified Web-based tool for students to document patient encounters.
Each clerkship created three categories of entries (Symptom, Skill and Special
Domain) for patient encounters. This allowed for a high level of consistency but
still provided enough flexibility. Progress in achieving the clerkship requirements
can be checked by students and clerkship directors and feedback provided as needed.
Multiple levels of data analysis can be performed. Results: Results
from 6 months of data will be available at the time of the presentation as well
as demonstration of our demo-site. Conclusions: Collaboration
between the clinical clerkships has resulted in development of a highly successful
Web-based tool to monitor student's progress and has allowed us to make individual
adjustments as needed to meet clerkship requirements. We can now track progress
across clerkships and compare educational experiences at different learning sites
as well as seasonal influences. |
